Fifteen years ago I introduced the “T” flag to fellow goose hunters to be used in attracting distant flocks of geese to their spread of decoys. I had used this method for two years as a guide and experienced much success. I was confident when I went public it would be a successful addition to anybody’s decoy spread. I’ll call that spread (conventional) plan “A”.
Now in 2007, I want to introduce “Plan B” (to be used when plan A has failed to produce the desired result). In fact, some hunters may choose to make this method plan “A” due to the cost of decoys, trailers to haul them, and trucks to pull the trailers, say nothing of the high price of gasoline or diesel fuel to power the trucks. I have assembled the products to make plan “B” a successful reality.
Let’s call the method “First Flock In”tm. Your feet and back become the conveyor. You can reach the center of muddy fields that are untouchable with a truck and trailer. Obviously, everything has to be lightweight and portable. For that, I am relying on products that I personally have designed and field-tested. You may want to start with a used golf bag (cheap) to carry the poles, stakes and wings used in creating the illusion of a flock, in the process of, landing in a feeding field selected by you during scouting. If you slept in, you may want to stalk into a field already holding a live flock of feeding birds. Setting up downwind of a feeding flock, with a plan, can be a deadly method of shooting incoming geese. Stronger winds are your ally, and terrain can be analyzed to allow your stalking route to be a successful one. Success using this system can be very gratifying to the hunter who has gotten bored with the plan “A” style.

The products I am offering to those who choose The Plan “B” hunting technique include the following: |
1. “Decoy In The Sky”: Fabric silhouettes of geese in flight and in the process of landing. The wind pockets in the wings catch the wind, creating a realistic wing movement (to be used in conjunction with 10 foot - 30 foot poles seen below).
2. Fiberglass poles with adaptors: These poles hold my new “Decoy In The Sky” fabric silhouettes. Currently, I have 10-foot, 13-foot, and 30-foot poles for this purpose. You may also want to consider my 48” Fiberglass “Shadow-Caster” Stakes. Used with the single pole. Place upwind and on sunny days the shadow that is cast adds to the illusion of birds landing. Also, a great place to hide.
3. Concealment Apron: Replace your cumbersome layout blind with this apron. Wear it, its comfortable. Tip: Laying flat and shooting straight up offers the closest distance to the bird and their bodies are in the most vulnerable killing position. Available in several camo patterns. See Flagman's product catalog for more options.
4. Shotgun Flag Adaptor: Attach a Pole Kite to this adaptor and point the muzzle up. Used in conjunction with this apron, you become undetectable and the gun is in the ready position similar to a turkey hunter.
5. Wind Bag “back half”: Wind-activated decoys placed upwind to appear as birds that have just landed which creates the walking and feeding motion of a goose. The Wind bag is a great addition to all makes and models of decoys used in the plan “A” spread. The illusion of movement is very life-like.
6. Stalking Cow: A good way to hide in a sitting position. I provide the graphics (two pieces) of the Holstein cow. You prime a 4’ x 8’ sheet of Luan plywood, apply the graphics and cut out with a saber saw. Once you have made the first one, you have a pattern for a whole herd. Works well with a plan “A” set up.
You may already have some of the components used in plan “B”. Give Randy a call at 1-800-575-4782 for help in putting plan “B” together for your hunting party.
